Did You KNOW? Connecticut Discontinues Physical Media Filings

Nearly every state has gone "paperless" when it comes to accepting and processing payroll withholding and unemployment taxes. A new trend is emerging with states discontinuing the practice of accepting any files sent on physical media such as cartridges, disks, etc. for processing quarterly filings.

The Connecticut Department of Labor will be implementing this practice after the fourth quarter of 2008: they will only accept files uploaded through their internet site using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). You will send the exact same file currently being placed on your physical media: the only difference is how the file is delivered to the Department of Labor.

LTtax has partnered with Greenshades Software to reformat data in your system and generate the correct file format for you to send to Connecticut (and all other states). Using FTP for submitting your files has many advantages, including:

  • Eliminates postage costs to send media through mail.
  • Eliminates damage to media.
  • Increases security required for personal information.
  • Automatically confirms receipt of filing via email.

To begin your FTP services in Connecticut, you are required to register by going to: http://www.ctdol.state.ct.us/uitax/ftp_form1.htm
